What To Do in the Case of an Emergency

It is rare in orthodontics that any problem with your braces needs to be immediately treated in our office. In fact, many of the most common concerns can be addressed or temporarily eliminated at home. Below we have addressed several of the most common problems experienced by our patients and suggestions for how to solve them. If you feel as though you can’t solve your problem on your own, please call our office immediately and we will schedule an appointment as quickly as possible. In the meantime, please use the information below to resolve any minor problems you encounter during treatment.

Loose Brackets or Bands: If one of your brackets or wires is loosened, please call our office immediately. Your bracket should be re-fitted as soon as possible. In severe cases, you may have a situation that requires cutting a wire or sliding a bracket off a wire for the night or over the weekend. If you need to cut a wire in case of emergency, you may use fingernail clippers that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. Please call our office the next business day, so that we may schedule an appointment for you as soon as possible.

Wire Irritations: Sometimes if one of the wires on your braces is causing you discomfort, you can move the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab or an eraser. If you are unable to move the wire, try covering the sharp part with a small piece of cotton or a small amount of wax. If you are unable to reduce the pain of the wire, you can cut it with sterilized scissors or nail clippers. If you are unable to reduce your discomfort, call our office for an appointment

Lost Separators: Most patients lose a separator during their treatment. Do not worry about losing a separator, but call our office to see if it needs to be replaced.

Discomfort with Orthodontic Treatment: During the first week after your braces are in place you will most likely feel a bit of pain and discomfort as your teeth get used to being in braces. You may take acetaminophen or other non-aspirin pain relievers to help you manage the pain while you adjust. A warm washcloth or heating pad may also help reduce the soreness in your jaw.
