Tips for Getting Kids Interested in Oral Care

It's important to get kids on the right track with their oral care early as doing so will help ensure they have healthy smiles that will last a lifetime. Good dental hygiene should begin as early as possible. We encourage parents to take the time to show your children how to properly brush and floss their teeth so that good oral hygiene becomes routine. Brushing and flossing doesn't have to be boring. By brushing and flossing your teeth with your child, your youngster will learn the proper techniques to use while also realizing that taking care of their teeth is something important that must be done daily. Consider downloading a favorite song to your smartphone and play it for your child during their brushing sessions. Children like to choose their favorite toothbrushes and toothpaste so take your child shopping for these items.

Importance of an Early Orthodontic Evaluation

Because things like tooth displacement and a bad bite can be evident as soon as a child starts developing teeth, it's recommended that an orthodontist see children by the age of 7 or at the first sign of orthodontic problems. When your child is given an early orthodontic evaluation, it can help prevent more serious dental problems from occurring later on which may require extensive treatment or even surgery to correct. While many children will not need braces at an early age, this first exam can help determine when treatment should begin.

Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment

There are many benefits associated with early orthodontic treatment including:

  • Can help influence proper jaw growth for improved facial symmetry
  • Can make room for crowded teeth<
  • Can prevent/limit trauma to protruding front teeth
  • Can shorten treatment time if braces are required
  • Can create space for teeth which have not yet erupted
  • Can eliminate the need for tooth extraction

Schedule an Appointment for Your Child Today!

When you schedule your child's first visit with us at our Tucson orthodontics office, Dr. Bedoya will provide your child with a thorough examination followed by a discussion of potential treatment options. We may also reserve an hour following the exam for diagnostic records (X-rays, photos and impressions), which are necessary for developing an individualized treatment plan. We encourage you to ask questions and promise to take the time to answer them all. We will cover everything important during this time including making the determination if treatment is needed, what type of treatment should be used, how long treatment will take and what it will cost. We'll then set up a consultation visit to discuss treatment options, time frames and financial arrangements.
